Overview

The role

 

We are looking to recruit a Tax Manager to support our Head of Tax across the entirety of the business, but with a particular personal skillset focused on indirect taxes.

A central responsibility will be to deliver accurate indirect tax reporting to the Group on a monthly and quarterly basis, including the completion of VAT (for our UK corporate entities) and IPT (for Syndicate 218) returns for submission to HMRC.  

Reporting to the Head of Tax and Group Head of Finance, the role will be responsible for creating and maintaining an environment of robust and effective financial reporting and compliance for indirect taxes with strong processes, procedures and controls.

The individual will assist with ad-hoc indirect tax queries from stakeholders across the business, as well as liaising with HMRC and our auditors.

Key responsibilities  

 

• Draft responses and hold discussions with HMRC on the Group’s new Partial Exemption Special Method application.

• Preparation and submission of the Group’s UK VAT returns and Capital Good Scheme adjustment.

• Review of Syndicate 218’s UK IPT returns.

• Provide ad-hoc support to the business on indirect tax queries arising from daily operations.

• Provide ongoing VAT advice and training to internal stakeholders across the business, including finance, procurement and legal team.

• Work with the Finance and Risk teams to coordinate the Group’s (indirect) tax processes and control environment. Support compliance with the Senior Accounting Officer provisions for all of our UK companies within scope.

• Develop an indirect tax strategy across the group, minimising VAT leakage, identifying risk mitigation strategies and further progressing the Group’s move towards Making Tax Digital.

• Co-ordinate with external tax providers and Lloyd’s of London as necessary.

Assist the Head of Tax with UK and international tax compliance responsibilities throughout the tax calendar. These could include, for example:

  • preparation of the Group’s UK corporation tax returns and tax provisions;
  • verifying P11D submissions with our payroll provider;
  • preparation of the Group’s PAYE Settlement Agreement;
  • drafting internal Transfer Pricing supporting documentation;
  • assisting with the development of the Group’s Pillar 2 / Bermuda CIT compliance processes and filings (first due 2026).

 

The above duties and responsibilities are not an exhaustive list and you may be required to undertake any other reasonable duties compatible with your experience and competencies. This description may be varied from time to time to reflect changing business requirements.

 

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

 

• Comprehensive experience of calculating and accounting for VAT and other indirect taxes, including customs duties.

• Experience of liaising with HMRC and relevant stakeholders. 

• Microsoft office applications – advanced Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

• Ideally previous practical in-house indirect tax experience.

• Experience with SunSystems, Q&A and Cognos IBM Planning Analytics (TM1), PowerBI.

• Ideally accounting and/or tax qualification
