The role
The Assistant Underwriter role sets the foundations for an Underwriting career. The primary responsibilities are to capture customers risk details, processing renewals, mid-term amendments and cancellations. They may also write a range of low complexity risks within their individual underwriting authority licence and within the products risk appetite.
Key responsibilities
Execute Underwriting Strategy: Manage quotes, renewals, MTA’s, and cancellations within risk appetite and authority.
Referral Process: Use referral system for risks beyond authority or risk appetite.
Quality and Timeliness: Aim for accuracy and meet quality standards; work within handling times for Service Level Agreements.
Fraud Prevention: Adhere to zero-tolerance fraud strategy; report suspicious activities to Policy Validation Unit promptly.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all internal and external regulations, guidelines, and practices.
Complaint Handling: Resolve complaints informally when possible; escalate unresolved issues within specified timeframes.
Continuous Learning: Proactively develop skills to improve performance.
Performance Metrics: Achieve personal targets and collaborate to meet business objectives.
High-Performance Culture: Support and demonstrate the organization’s high-performance culture through behaviors and interactions.

Insurance Principles: Apply underwriting effectively.
Market Knowledge: Know the landscape and key competitors.
Technical Expertise: Experience with relevant products.
Product Knowledge: Understand coverage, exclusions, conditions.
Risk Selection: Work within agreed appetite.
Pricing: Determine information needed and price simple risks.
Policy Lifecycle: Handle transactions across the policy lifecycle.
Regulatory Compliance: Follow legal, regulatory, and compliance provisions.
Distribution Channels: Experience with broker models and partners.
